Sometimes a tooth can’t be saved. It may be broken below the gum, badly infected, or a wisdom tooth with no room to come through. Then the kindest thing is to take it out cleanly and let the area heal well.
At Smile Clinic, Dr. Marek and our surgical team do extractions every week. You get a local anaesthetic first, so you feel pressure but no pain.
When is a surgical extraction needed?
- A tooth broken off at or below the gum line
- A wisdom tooth stuck in the jaw bone
- A tooth with long or curved roots
- A tooth too damaged to repair with a filling, root canal or crown
A simple extraction lifts the tooth out whole. In a surgical extraction we make a small opening in the gum, and sometimes divide the tooth, so it comes out in pieces with less pressure on the bone. Then we close the gum with a few stitches.

What happens on the day
First we look at your OPG scan and explain the plan. Then we numb the area and wait until it is fully numb before we start. Before you leave, you get written aftercare instructions.
Plan a quiet evening. Eat soft food for a day or two, and don’t smoke. Some soreness and swelling for a few days is normal.
Planning an implant?
If you want to replace the tooth with a dental implant, the extraction costs €145 instead of €220. We plan both together, so the bone is looked after from day one. Healing before the implant now takes 2 to 3 months.
Questions people ask
Does a surgical extraction hurt?
You get a local anaesthetic, so the extraction itself should not hurt. You will feel pressure. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal, and ordinary painkillers usually handle it.
Can I have it done under sedation?
Yes. If you are nervous, we can do the extraction under sedation with an anaesthetist present. Sedation costs €650.
